Spanning the Greater Northwest

Working in operations with Cru I realize that I don’t get many opportunities for front-line, on campus ministry. Especially as I am in the process of raising support. However, I have been working hard at keep up what is happening around the northwest. It helps me keep pressing hard toward getting back into the office.

In light of that, I thought I would share a few things really quickly about what has been happening around the northwest.

1. I recently heard a story about a student who is seeing how God can use her life to change the lives around her. Shortly after realizing this to be true. She started having the opportunities to help a fellow student at the University of Washington grow in her faith after placing her faith in Jesus.

2. Also, there was a student recently at the University of Portland who placed her trust in Christ. After searching and looking for answers she got a chance to learn who Jesus is and how he changes lives today. Now, she is getting a chance to learn more and will have the opportunity to lead others to Jesus.

3. About 30 Students from Washington State University and Montana State University came to Portland, OR over their spring break to serve the city and the colleges here. While they were here they were able to meet physical needs of the homeless by serving at the Portland Rescue Mission. As well as share their faith with students at Portland State, WSU Vancouver, and the different Portland Community Colleges.

4. At the University of Montana this year 16 students have received Christ into their lives. 18 Students are moving back int the dorms as upperclassmen to minister to the freshmen who will live there. They are also sending seven students on summer mission projects this summer.

And these are only a few things that are happening around the northwest on our campuses. If you know of other things that are going on please share them in the comments below!

Today’s Workspace: The Seattle Area

Today, I am heading north to Seattle, WA. I am hoping to spend some time with friends and family there that will be able to help me grow my ministry team. I am also hoping that this will be a time of great encouragement for them and for me. I look forward to this time for sure!

I will be up in Seattle from Tuesday to Friday, and am hoping to meet with as many people as possible. That means there will be a lot of driving. And when I drive, I try to make that time super purposeful. I don’t know about you, but if I take a trip on my own. I almost always listen to podcasts and sermons.

I will most likely be listening to the following, and I thought I would share them with you!

  1. Michael Hyatt’s Podcast, This is your life. He talks a lot about leading intentionally and how to improve your life from work to play.
  2. Solid Rock, Work Series. This is my church here in Portland. And I missed out on a few of the sermons. So, I thought I would catch up on these because I want to share what I am learning with those too.
  3. Catalyst Podcast. I will listen to a lot of these. Catalyst is about getting great information out to church leaders about how to minister to the world today. I love these, but they are always an hour long so it takes a car ride to listen to them.

Anyway, I hope you have a great day, and if you would. Pray for my trip to Seattle. Pray that people would join my ministry team and know of a lot of people to introduce me to. Pray for safe travel too! Thank you!

Grace and Peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

How can we be more RESPONSIBLE?

Responsibility has snuck up on me like a prowling lioness. One day I was just a single man enjoying a new job with a couple of roommates. And today, I am a husband learning all about leading a marriage. Really it wasn’t an overnight sort of thing, but it sure can feel like it sometimes.

Some folks are born with a natural tendency to be responsible. Others may not be. And I wonder if that has anything to do with the growing number of 20-somethings that are still parent supported. But that is a whole different topic.

According to one of my favorite books, Strengthsfinders 2.0, someone with a responsibility trait would have some of these characteristics:

  • You take psychological ownership for anything you commit to, and whether large or small, you feel emotionally bound to follow it through to completion.
  • If for some reason you cannot deliver, you automatically start to look for ways to make it up to the other person.
  • This conscientiousness, this near obsession for doing things right, and your impeccable ethics, combine to create your reputation: utterly dependable.

These are great things to think about. But what about the rest of us? Those who may not carry this Responsibility trait in a naturally strong way? I’m a responsable adult, but I fall very short of things all the time! What do we do when this is true?

I have come up with a few things to work on carrying the load of responsibility that I have now. These things are in the working stages, but I think that it will help me to grow into being a better and more responsible husband.

  1. Trust God with it. I know that I cannot do everything on my own. And especially because I am weak in this area the only way I can really grow strong is through God’s grace. I pray about it. My wife will ask me when we come to a decision or topic if I have prayed about it. If I haven’t, I know I haven’t been trusting God to help me.
  2. Think of how it should be. I try to envision what something should look like. For example our budget. I imagine how our perfect situation would look like if we did this well. If we were responsible with our spending/savings/planning. I ask, “What would be true of the perfect way we do this?”
  3. Start an Action Plan. After I think of the ideal in the situation. I start making action steps that build on each other. This is the part that takes a little work for me. I don’t always know how to put things in the right order or communicate to my wife why I think these are the best steps. If this is the case for you, read step one, and come back to it.
  4. Take the first step. Now that you have a plan in order. You can take the first action in your plan. For your budget: track your expenses for two months. For your health: Throw away all the junk food in the kitchen and pantry. I think you get the idea.

As you start to work through those action steps you get the satisfaction of checking them off and moving closer to the ideal. But what helps us be more responsable is that we actually do these things. We need to be held accountable. When you are married, you have an easy accountability partner. Because if you are dropping the ball, it directly affects you spouse. If you are single, consider getting a couple of close friends or a sibling to help you take some steps in the right direction.

Once last thought. Responsibility isn’t just taking steps toward goals. It is how we live day-in and day-out. The truth is we can get so far on our own. Everyone will hit a wall sooner or later. We need to rely completely on God for the grace and power to fulfill the responsibility placed before us.

Are you naturally a responsible person? What are somethings that help you to fulfill the responsibilities that you have?

My Favorite Green Chair – Today’s Workspace

Lately, I have been working at home. Or my favorite Starbucks. That said. I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to share about different places where working on my ministry has taken me. So I thought, I would tell you about the place that I have been sitting lately.

This is my green chair. I sit in it during the day while I work at home. I love this chair. Its comfortable and sits just right for me. And its placed right by the window so I get a cool breeze and watch the city craziness go on below me.

From this spot I get to do a lot of writing. I write prayer letters and blog posts. I write thank yous and notes of encouragement. But I also get to read. I read so much here. Depending on the day you would find me studying Nehemiah or reading something for fun. Maybe that is why I appreciate this spot so much. I get to do things that I really enjoy here.

There really is nothing to particular about this spot. But it has given me a lot of time to draw closer to God. Whether that has been in reading or writing. But I have really enjoyed this chair. I don’t know what I would do if it was gone.

Wink, wink.

Digging into the Bible: My Study of Nehemiah

The other day my wife and I were out to lunch with a friend. At the end of lunch our friend grabbed a delicious slice of carrot cake. I love carrot cake. Especially when it is moist and heavy with that great cream cheese frosting. I love it. Its tasty and about the only desert that I will sit down and slowly consume.

Earlier that day, before lunch I was reading my Bible. Really digging into the book of Nehemiah. I don’t always associate biblical study with food. But as I took a bite of that carrot cake, I thought that this is how we should read our Bible. Reading it slowly and fully.

Lately, I have been devouring the book of Nehemiah and it has been amazing! My time studying the book is marked by a few things.

1) Prayer. I try to make sure that I pray before I read the Bible. And I try and pray after I have read and studied.

2) Reading the Bible. As I study Nehemiah. I have been breaking it down chapter by chapter. And then I move into sections of each chapter. But every time I read through the chapter before I start.

3) I break down my readings into four parts according to Read the Bible for a Change by Ray Lubeck.

  • Discover. What does it say? Purely information based.
  • Understand. What does it mean to the people when it was originally written? Contextual Meaning.
  • Meaning. What does it mean for us? The timeless truths for us and the original reader.
  • Application. What do we do with this? There are action steps or important things to know.

4) I follow a separate Bible study. I picked up Bible Devotional Study to work through Nehemiah to see if there is more to discover.

5) I read a commentary or book that walks through Nehemiah as well. I am currently reading A Passion for Faithfulness by J.I. Packer. It’s a heck of a book so far.

The results of studying Nehemiah like this has been amazing. I feel like I am learning a lot on my own, but these other resources are really great. The other thing that is important to remember is that this will take time. I suppose I could read through all this very quickly. But I try to take my time through this to learn a lot.

How do you really study the Bible? What are additional resources that you use?
